September 19-30: Renaissance Star Testing

This year, we will begin a new assessment for students in the curriculum areas of Math and Reading. This new assessment is called Star Renaissance Testing and  will provide us with comprehensive data that will help guide instruction and track students throughout their educational career.

Students in transitional kindergarten, kindergarten, and first grade will be using iPads with headphones to complete the assessment. Students in grades 208 will be using the computer lab to complete their testing.

This testing differs from our previous week-long ITBS testing. This new testing system will consist of two or three sessions in the computer lab, with each session taking no more than 30 minutes.  Each home room teacher will notify you of the class' dates and times so you can assure their attendance and participation.

Here are some suggestions to help your child perform well on these tests:

  • Make sure your child gets a good night's sleep before the test days.

  • Provide a healthy breakfast and snacks the day of the testing.

  • Send your child off to school with confidence-building words of encouragement and support.

  • Suggest your child breathe deeply and try to relax during the testing.

  • Remind your child to review all the possible answers before choosing one.

  • Do not schedule any conflicting appointments during your child's testing time.

The STAR testing will be held again January 17-27 and May 1-12.

Families may donate items for babies, which will be given to ALPHA.

Alpha items may be turned in to Brittany Enamorado in Room 4. Items for the elderly may be turned into Mary Donnelly in Room 3.

Here is a list of what's "hot" with the elderly at the care centers:

Important: OMS Hot Lunch Accounts

There are a few changes to the lunch accounting system this year:

  1. All families with more than one student automatically have a "family" account. Deposits will go into a single "family" pot that all students will draw from. If you have students at OMS and MCP, we are able to combine both schools into a mega-family account.  This will be done only on request.

  2. If your child orders lunch once a week or more, you will need to open an account. Daily payments of between $4.00 to $5.00 can no longer be done. To open your account, you must have a minimum of $50 to deposit.

  3. PayPal is now accepted! Log into your PayPal account or create one. Once you are logged on select My PayPal, then select "Send money to friends and family." Send the money to caroliq@msn.com. You will then indicate the amount of money you would like to place on your child's account. In the "notes section" please include your child's name and the classroom teacher.

  4. If you have a middle school student who purchases breakfast, cash is acceptable at the burrito cart, or purchases can be debited to their lunch account.

The new price for hot lunch is $4.50. Grades 1-3 have the option of ordering a regular lunch at $4.00, a larger lunch at $4.50, or a salad at $4.50. Milk is still 50 cents and is sold separately.

Please Note: OMS Extended Care Phone Number

OMS has a direct-dial telephone number for the after-school program.

The telephone number is (805) 548-0299

OMS Campus Safety

Parents who volunteer or visit classes on the OMS campus are required to sign in and out every time they visit.

This policy was implemented to assure safety on the OMS Campus, and it enables school staff to know who is on campus at all times. Please help us protect your children by complying with this policy.

After 2:45 PM, parents are welcome to enter the side doors to wait for their children by their classrooms if they are not parked on Peach or Broad streets.

Old Mission School Teachers are now Online and on Twitter!

OMS

OMS teachers now have individual wiki pages containing live twitter feeds with classroom updates.

Every teacher's wiki page will provide regular updates regarding homework assignments, class news, and important announcements.

If you have a Twitter account, make sure to "follow" your children's teachers. If you don't have a Twitter account, don't worry. It is not necessary for you to have one in order to view teachers' Twitter feeds - just click on one of the following links:

If you need to get in touch with a teacher, please continue to either call or send an email (we're new to Twitter and want to make sure we are able to get back to you in a timely manner).
